Richard L. Dorman Collection of Narrow Gauge Images
The collection is devoted to the narrow gauge railroads of Colorado and New Mexico, comprising some 18,000 black and white images and 7,000 color slides. This acquisition places the Friends' library and archive among the most important such institutions in the country, if not the world. The Board of Directors mandated that funds needed for accession, storage, scanning, and publication of guides and catalogs must not impose a burden on regular operating monies. In short, we must raise money for those activities. We envision funds coming from those members who might not be as active in the restoration work in Chama and Antonito.
Richard Dorman spent 30 years collecting photos of the narrow gauge railroads of Colorado and New Mexico, he published several books including many photos from his collection. A group of dedicated volunteers from the Friends have organized, catalogued, reviewed and scanned the originals into a dedicated computer system. A searchable database has been compiled which will allow retrieval of desired photographs. The original photos are in permanent, archival storage.
The database for the Dorman photographs is being updated and corrected as needed. The pdf catalogs created from the database are being recreated and the date of the database is listed on the first page of each catalog. The most current data can be found in the the spreadsheet data which is both in Excel format and comma-separated-variable format. As of February 1, 2016, all of the Dorman Catalogs have been created and uploaded to this WEB site. The photo information is being updated regularly as we get new information from people like you who are knowledgeable of railroad history.
