Russell Sperry Collection of Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Images
This collection is from Russell B. Sperry (b. 1941) who was a high school science teacher at the time these photos were taken, a volunteer on the crew of the American Freedom Train in 1975-76, and later a computer programmer and systems analyst . 220 of Russ's photographs are of D&RGW narrow gauge operations in the 1960's - including the last freights over Cumbres Pass in August, 1968. 140 of his photos are from the early days of the C&TS - 1970 through 1975. These photographs are sorted into five volumes of slides.
A group of dedicated volunteers from the Friends have organized, catalogued, reviewed and scanned the originals into a dedicated computer system. A searchable database has been compiled which will allow retrieval of desired photographs. The original photos are in permanent, archival storage.
The database for the Sperryr photographs is being updated and corrected as needed. The pdf catalogs created from the database are being recreated and the date of the database is listed on the first page of each catalog. The most current data can be found in the the spreadsheet data which is both in Excel format and comma-separated-variable format. As of January 30, 2017, the first of the Sperry Catalogs have been created and uploaded to this WEB site.
